The Yale-China Association founded the Xiang-Ya (Hunan-Yale) Hospital and medical school over 100 years ago. Xiangya was one of the top schools in China and continues to be a high regarded, central government funding medical school.
Established in 1987, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is a comprehensive eye health facility and a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness.
Dr. Puwat Charukamnoetkanok, the current director of the hospital, is an internationally renowned ophthalmologist who performed the first phacoemulsification in Thailand and has been instrumental in introducing this surgical technique in Thailand. He has personally instructed many—if not most—Thai ophthalmologists in phacoemulsification.
